An air plant, spotted on the trip to Lamanai, these grow all over the place. They are sold as novelties in the US at 3 or 4 inches tall. These wild ones were a foot tall or larger. A nice beach house we spotted on the way up to see Captain Morgans. Wouldn't be too hard to retire and live in this would it? Boobies nesting on lighthous Caye. Observed from a specially built platform. Another Boobie posing for a photograph. There were a whole bunch of these birds just sitting around and posing. I must admit, my joke about "seeing a whole lot of boobies at one time" did not go down to well. That's what you get with cutting edge comedy. Yet more boobies. Could it be that I have a boobie fixation. Maybe I need to see somebody about it. No, wait, the next photograph is not of boobies so I'll hold off. It's much more exciting. it's a bus!
The bus to Lamanai mayan ruins. After a long journey by water it was nice to board the luxury bus. It suspension was state of the art (sorry - Ark!) This is the view from the beach of Captain Morgans apartments. We were so impressed we bought a timeshre so we'll be headed back pretty soon. Maybe next time we'll go in Whale shark season. The bedroom of the timeshare apartment. Still being finished but very nice. We bought a 2 bedroom apartment and this is the 2nd bedroom. In all fairness to the first we had to show it. You know how bedrooms get if they are left out. The living room and kitchen of the apartment. Note: For those visiting a diving centre and tropical island, a big screen TV is just what you need!
A closer shot of the kitchen. The counter top is slate carved with traditional mayan figures. Great for cleaning.... One of the pools. We have just got a news letter announcing that the bottom has now been tiled with the resort logo. Phew!! That's a load off my mind. Don't touch my coconuts! If you look at this and go 'Aaaaahhh' I hate you! The toilets on lighthouse caye. I thought these needed to be shared with the world. A great example of how the 21st century has encroached on this island paradise. Or not.
The ferry. Ambergris caye is split and this is the way to cross the cut. It's dragged by hand. They say they are going to build a bridge. I think they should leave it. Anyone for snapper.....this would need a lot of chips. A nice yellow flower. A nice white flower. A nice red flower. Is this informative or what?
This is Ramons Village where we stayed, a garden view room gives you just that. It may be in the garden but this is the view from the steps of our cabana. As you can see, it's not a huge hike to the sea. THis is William the crocodile. About 10 or 11 feet long the crocs inhabit the inland waters on the island. They move really fast and the kids feed them if you buy the chickens.. A smaller croc, about 4 feet long on the way to lamanai. He's just hanging out. This is Justina the Hermit crab. These are on sale in the USA (much smaller) as kids pets. They are sold to be killed basically as they don't last too long. This is how they should be.
A female howler monkey at lamanai. How do I know she was female? She had a baby on her back but was not in the mood to show us for long enough to take a photo. Same monkey. Still not cooperating. If only I'd had my gun.. Me in the 'Khalahari Ferrari' The favoured mode of transport on the island. They don't go fast enough to kill anything so they are ideal. Look - I found a rare concrete coral! Warning. Do not tough stuff like this. The surface growth is irritating, all the skin peeled off my hands over the next week or so... An iguana. I didn't get his name. He looks like a Frank but iguanas are tricky.
This is an iguana trying to look like a tree. As I said, Iguanas are tricky but they also look nothing like trees.. Two jacks and a fish who seems to be a fan of Adam and the Ants. These were hanging round under the boat as soon as it was moored in 6 feet of water. Two more jacks who look particularly depressed. Lighthouse Caye, Wouldn't want to get marooned here. The main interstate on Ambergris caye. This is an accident waiting to happen and really needs some mechanism for speed control to be put in place.
The main Street in San Pedro. This really is a danger with cars reaching speeds of up to 10 miles an hour on some days. A mayan carving / scupture from the temple at Lamanai. Very impressive and, if your'e in Belize, worth a trip. Under the dock at Ramons village lives Morty the Moray and Florence the Nurse Shark. Note how Morty looks less like a Moray amd more like a sock puppet...I am not sure if this is a trait of all Morays or just Morty. A pretty poor photo which would not have been included but for the fact that I love the shocked expression on the fish top right.
Mike the parrot fish. These are great, they munch huge lumps of coral and then err...ummm...'eject' clouds of sand. It's impressive to say the least. This is, I believe, a pipe fish. I may be wrong. It looks like a pipe and it's a fish so I am naturally assuming some stuff here. Puppy - our temporary dog. He'd follow us round and sleep in our apartment. He was an expert beggar and we have no doubt he'll be fine. If you see him give him a pat for us. This is a ray and he is, coincidentally enough, named Raymond. Honestly! I could not have planned it better. Who'd have thunk it? A very rare photo of a Ray about to attack a Nurse shark. moments later the water was a mass of teeth and shark flesh. - Would I make this stuff up?
A view from a resturant we had lunch at. I cannot remember the name but it was really good. You should go there. I recommend it. Another Nurse shark. This year I have actually bought some proper underwater photography gear so I can have crap photos that are in focus. Pretty sure this is actually a mushroom Scuba Sue in the Ferrari. This reminds me of the F1 calendars - the girl, the car, the adrenaline. OK. You can't see it? Well I feel sorry for you then. On the dock at Ramons. Not the tap (faucet) in the foreground. It's a jensen 345 with a 1/2 inch spigot and compressible washer. You don't see these every day.
Scuba Sue being snorkel Sue. This would be off the dock at Ramons. Again, I repeat my warning! Don't touch anything.. Lamanai. Some of these tourists have been here for thousands of years and were only discovered with recent excavations. I have seen the Blob (Yes the original version) and I am worried by this. It's actually termites but how they know to disguise themselves as a space alien shows remarkable intelligence. What can anyone say about Cedric. For gods sake don't get cornered by him at a party. When I first visited Belize in '84 it was not this crowded. Tourism is ruining it and causing jams like this on a regular basis!
