Belize - 06

These images can be clicked on to show a larger version. I recommend using full screen mode of Netscape, Firefox or Explorer (generally - View, Full Screen or press F11) to view the images.
In the editing process I have resized the images so that most of them fit on most screens. If you want the original then you'll find it here. Just match the named shown at the top of the image to the list. These are quite large images.
I used a DX800G with a Sea and Sea Strobe this year. I see some improvement I think but after a camera flood I am not sure where I'll be with it next year. Hopefully Sea and Sea are nice and helpful.
I cannot say enough good things about Irfanview which I use a lot. Thoroughly recommended.

Feel free to comment in my newly written guestbook - not finished yet but hopefully spam free for the moment. You can also register at The discussion forums should you feel like it to dicuss anything under the sun.

cartman1.JPG
Cartman - the cat at Captain Morgans who had the sense to go to each apartment and get food. Suprisingly thin for 12 meals a day!!
DSCN1707.JPG
James who managed to take quite a few close ups of himself. Not sure if it was vanity or he did not know which way to hold the camera.
DSCN1708.JPG
Stingrays at a snorkel site near Caye Caulker. Snorkelling with these was great fun. Wearing my "Stingrays 1 - Steve Irwin 0" earned me some points with them so they were nice to me.
DSCN1710.JPG
A barracuda looks on, unamused by my T-shirt or the stingrays. There's no pleasing a barracuda.
DSCN1712.JPG
A close up of Jeremy the stingray. He was a bit of a show off but I took the pic anyway just to stop him bugging me.
DSCN1713.JPG
James again. More confusion with the camera I assume.
DSCN1718.JPG
Giggedy Giggedy - James's photo of an anonymous bottom. We couldn't figure out who owned it once we were above the water.
DSCN1729.JPG
An eagle ray - gliding past in a very relaxed fashion.
DSCN1730.JPG
Another eagle ray glides past. I am not to sure of the tenses for glide, maybe it glid, or glode? Glidded is just ridiculous.
DSCN1731.JPG
More glidding. I refuse to take any more photos of eagle rays, the grammar hassle is just too much.
group_shot.JPG
Our little group on holiday - Amy, Kelly and Sue at the top then James, Ian and John. Surnames are not given in order to protect the innocent.
IMAG0001.JPG
James attempts to discover the sex of a grouper from 10 feet away. A futile exercise as groupers are notoriously shy and keep thier naughty parts hidden at all times.
IMAG0002.JPG
Note the style displayed in this picture. The bold use of shorts under the wetsuit earned a round of applause from the divers on the boat.
IMAG0003.JPG
A Parrot fish being all parrotty.
IMAG0004.JPG
A crab hiding away in a rock. I have dived in Belize many times and this year is the first time I recall seeing crabs. Maybe they were all hiding from me the past times.
IMAG0007.JPG
Jenny and Craig. These two got married and were on thier honeymoon and Jenny was certifying. She did great apart from forgetting to breathe out..;-)
IMAG0011.JPG
Damn eagle rays and their glidding escapades!
IMAG0018.JPG
Jenny and Craig again, this is very much like a photo we have - except for the fact that it is not of Jenny and Craig.
IMAG0023.JPG
Luncheon!! (Now would be a good time to check out the
Upper Crust
IMAG0032.JPG
A seascape, several sponges and some soft corals plus a rather friendly blue fish whose name I completely forgot to note.
IMAG0036.JPG
A gray angel, one of the easier angels to photograph. French then Queens then Bi-colors follow on the difficulty scale with arc being the most difficult.
IMAG0043.JPG
I think this is a schoolmaster. It looks very serious indeed. Fish should not be too joyous in my opinion.
IMAG0049.JPG
On the way to Lamanai. There is a boat trip followed by a bus trip followed by another boat trip. The guides have to take exams and are great at explaining a lot of what you see on the way.
IMAG0058.JPG
A water lily on the way out. The lilies only stay open for half the day as they are afraid of Jaguars. (How stringent is that exam the guides take?)
IMAG0060.JPG
The bus to Lamanai. You cannot see it's suspension in this photo as it has none!! The roads are, shall we say, a little rough? Sue and my Mother are standing in the way of the bus for some reason.
IMAG0062.JPG
Flowers at the rest stop. I don't know what type they are but they are quite nice to look at.
IMAG0064.JPG
Coconuts are so common in Belize, almost as if they grow on trees (I cannot believe I have sunk that low to do the old 'grow on trees joke', I must need another beer!
IMAG0066.JPG
A local dog at the rest stop. Bomba village is the name of the stop by the way, Athur was the name of the dog. The dogs in Belize are generally very friendly if a little uncouth.
IMAG0067.JPG
Low tide in Bomba village ;-)
IMAG0070.JPG
I cannot recall where this was taken. I must make better notes.
IMAG0077.JPG
A Black orchid, apparently the national flower of belize. They make an awful fuss when you pick them and stick them in your rucksack.
IMAG0078.JPG
This may look like nothing but I am assured that in the center of the photo is a Boa Constrictor. No, I was not convinced either but I didn't want to look stupid by arguing. It may just be a twig.
IMAG0080.JPG
A sculptue of a Mayan. Apparently they died out as they all had extremely large heads.
IMAG0081.JPG
James and Amy pause as they climb towards the top of a Mayan tower. Shortly after this I sprinted past them on my way tot he top in record time (7.56 secs).
IMAG0084.JPG
An ancient Mayan gargoyle. One of the only remaining in existence. The significance of the red hat escapes historians.
IMAG0085.JPG
A more distant view of the same monument making it look a lot smaller than it actually is. It tries to diminish the achievement of me climbing it which is just wrong.
IMAG0086.JPG
Another Mayan tower. Did these guys have too much time on their hands or what?
IMAG0093.JPG
A Parrot fish again, being rather Parrotty. They seem to do little else which is vaguely annoying for some reason.
IMAG0097.JPG
Bloody Eagle Rays. I am beginning to hate them and thier glidey ways.
IMAG0098.JPG
A lobster - nuff said.
IMAG0100.JPG
A barracuda.
IMAG0103.JPG
More sponges and soft corals. This one makes a great background for the PC. Ensure you set it to Stretch to fit.
IMAG0104.JPG
A juvenile grouper rests in a sponge just quietly watching to world go by.
IMAG0106.JPG
I don't know. This one slipped through the editing process. It's kind of boring but I am too lazy to delete it now.
IMAG0109.JPG
A nice little speckled moray tacked away deep inside a barrel sponge.
IMAG0110.JPG
The same eel. Well, I could just be saying that - can you tell them apart? Maybe they are different ones and I am fooling you?
IMAG0118.JPG
I have to consult my fish book to identify this. Goat fish springs to mind but I am not certain. It is hanging over a barrel sponge in the same way as a brick doesn't.
IMAG0124.JPG
This is a pretty big barrel sponge. It's the size of a large...well, barrel.
IMAG0126.JPG
Could it be Jesus or could it be James?
IMAG0127.JPG
The dive boat coming to pick us up. Taken with a very wide angle lense as an 'over under' shot.
IMAG0129.JPG
This is the Caye we stopped at for a surface interval at Turneffe Atoll. It has a research center on it and very little else.
IMAG0131.JPG
Same place, different view. A very nice place for a stop for the surface interval.
IMAG0133.JPG
The boat waits for us as we rest in the sunshine.
IMAG0137.JPG
Turtle, Turtle, Turtle
IMAG0138.JPG
Turtle, Turtle, Turtle
IMAG0145.JPG
George. OK, not strictly a Belize photo but he is such a cool cat he deserves world recognition.
IMAG0155.JPG
Morty the Moray rests quietly beneath a rocky ledge before sneaking out and eating an innocent diver.
IMAG0324.JPG
A nurse shark slips past in the blue. Nurse sharks look like aircraft, graceful, smooth and with Jet engines affixed beneath each wing.
IMAG0345.JPG
Another nice sponge, this photo looks a bit blocky due to the conversion, this is why the full size images are provides as well. If you like an image I suggest checking the full size image as they are pre-editing and so better quality.
IMAG0353.JPG
A very friendly grouper. He just hung around patiently while I pointed the camera at him then sold me a bracelet and a wooden shark.
IMAG0357.JPG
Just a whole bunch of fish! A school or a shoal or whatever. I prefer the term a shitload which better describes the amount present.
IMAG0358.JPG
A closeup of the fish in the previous photo. IThis was taken at about 30 feet I believe and we just ascended into them. Very cool to see.
IMAG0360.JPG
Sue, just relaxed and chillin' in the Belizean hood. Her air consumption is beating mine now but she is only 8 inches tall..
IMAG0369.JPG
Morty yet again, who knew all Morays were Jewish jewellers?
IMAG0370.JPG
There were sharks in the area and all the divers went to see them. I just hung around with Morty and we both took snaps. I took them of Morty and he took them at me.
IMAG0373.JPG
I am my own worst critic and much as I like these photos I still think they could be improved dramatically. Perhaps with a stylist for Morty and some throw pillows.
IMAG0374.JPG
Morty shows his good side as he tries to look coy for the camera.
IMAG0379.JPG
A Nurse shark just before he attacked and I was hospitalised.
IMAG0470.JPG
Sponges, corals, fish and rocks!! Who says you don't get good value for money on this site - oh wait, it's free. Damn!
IMAG0481.JPG
I like this just because it is almost a sillouette, no detail, just the shape. In photography terms it may not be very good but I find the image strangely pleasing.
IMAG0487.JPG
Billy and Bobby
IMAG0488.JPG
Bobby and Billy. Someone told me I had the names the wrong way round so I have corrected them. Apologies to Billy (or Bobby) and Bobby (or Billy).
IMAG0490.JPG
Sue watches a DVD on her Oceanic UW/DVD player. I think it was Raiders of the Lost Ark.
IMAG0492.JPG
Sue and her ENORMOUS snorkel. (it's actually tiny but she is, as mentioned, only 8 inches tall).
IMAG0494.JPG
Our glorious dive leader Will. Sleeping during a safety stop. Not that he was relaxed or anything but you could hear him snoring!
IMAG0495.JPG
Ready to ascend the group waits for Will to wake up. Apparently he has been known to snooze for over an hour during some stops.
IMAG0499.JPG
Fishing for the ingredients of Chum. See the recipe (and the insiduos plot to enslave mankind) here
IMAG0503.JPG
Still fishing, I am not sure we stopped in the best of spots but it was entertaining to see him throw the net.
IMAG0504.JPG
Amy and her ever present hat. Behind here sits Caroline who later became wrangeled in the great beer contoversy of oh six. I won't go into details but it got ugly. Before embarking on a trip, check for the beer!!
IMAG0505.JPG
Sue and Kelly - the shortage of beer is beginning to have it's effects as this shot clearly demonstrates.
IMAG0518.JPG
Sue underwater. Her eyes seem to ask 'Does my bum look big in this?'
IMAG0521.JPG
Stingrays when there is food in the water. I was being bumped by several rays and it was really cool. They are such wierd creatures but relatively harmless. Don't fear the rays, fear the humans.
IMAG0523.JPG
When the food is gone calm returns. These rays are just on the scrounge for scraps.
IMAG0531.JPG
This is what I was saying just the other day at my Athiest church meeting. I could not have put it more succinctly myself unless I said 'Even in Paradise there are lunatics'
IMAG0551.JPG
Sue and James on one of James's qualifying dives. Not quite as deep as some others but so much fun! 18 feet max inside Tuffee.
IMAG0552.JPG
Just swimming along at about 6 foot deep and with the sun still penetrating the water there was a lot of life to see.
IMAG0555.JPG
Quite a nice seascape I think. I have this as my current background. Well, unless you are reading this when I don't in which case - I don't.
IMAG0557.JPG
Note the divers in the distance framed nicely by the corals. I like this picture but I wish the diver on the left was not in it. Bloody divers - they get everywhere.
IMAG0559.JPG
Another shallow seascape. I must have been feeling artistic that day.
IMAG0562.JPG
Photo hogs. I wanted to get Alan (middle left) but when they saw the camera they all had to cram in to be in the picture. I had my revenge though - I ate several of them later at Fidos.
IMAG0581.JPG
A plant - I thought it looked nice and it's my site so that's all that counts.
IMAG0585.JPG
A hermit crab tries a conch shell to see if it will make a good new house. The deal fell through later when the inspection showed it had damp.
IMAG0587.JPG
This was a pretty big hermit crab. The conch shell he (or she) is trying out is about 10 inches across.
IMAG0590.JPG
Sue pretending to parachute - some people are so immature. I don't do this every dive at all.
IMAG0593.JPG
A nurse shark 'sleeps' on the sand away from all the divers and general annoyances of the ocean. We let this one sleep in peace and saved the harpoon for another day.
IMAG0595.JPG
Sue stands on the sand and tries to do the vulcan greeting. Unsuccessfully as it turns out but you have to give her points for trying.
IMAG0598.JPG
James Zykan (Dive instructor extraordinaire) drifts slowly down on one of James's qualification dives.
IMAG0601.JPG
James. Did pretty well for a first time in that he did not drown or get eaten by sharks. There's not a lot more you need to do.
IMAG0603.JPG
Well, maybe stay the right way up. James executes a complex barrel roll procedure designed to..well, I have no idea what it was for - any guesses?
IMAG0605.JPG
Just following a shark along. This one clearly had no idea where it was going so I abandoned the pursuit.
IMAG0613.JPG
Dude! WTF!!
IMAG0649.JPG
Belize offers a lot of finger canyon diving. YThe best of which is Tacklebox in my hmble opinion. I also like Eagle Ray canyon except for the damn eagle rays!
IMAG0652.JPG
Another nice windows background. Isn't evolution wonderful, it has managed to get life to a point where it works with Microsoft.
IMAG0653.JPG
Albert the Turtle.
IMAG0671.JPG
Turtle, Turtle, Turtle.
IMAG0673.JPG
These bring up a question regarding the photos. The blue background (or water in technical terms) looks very grainy in my turtle photos.
IMAG0674.JPG
If you view this in Photoshop at 23.3% of the original size it looks great, why is that. Is Nature at fault, My camera or My computer. Personally I am still blaming Darwin.
IMAG0681.JPG
This is one of my favourites. It prints pretty nicely from the original to standard print size as well. Even with my cheapy printer.
IMAG0684.JPG
Another shot looking up at the sharks. These were great whites and they were hungry. It was only through skill, courage and by telling some enormous lies I was able to get through them and surface.
IMAG0688.JPG
This was a nurse shark feeding 'frenzy' for those of you who have dived with nurse sharks you'll realise 'frenzy' is a bit of an exageration.
IMAG0689.JPG
More nurse sharks in a feeding 'tizzy'
IMAG0690.JPG
This is getting silly. If the were to form an ordely line they'd all get some food.
mutant manatee.jpg
This is the worst picture of a Manatee ever!! It is on Caye Calker and there are some real contenders for that honour. However, after careful consideration this one wins the title.
OffToLaminai.JPG
Sue and Mum once more with Caroline trying to sneak into the picture from the left. This was on the trip to Lamanai after the terrible beer incident of oh six.
