Belize Photos, November 15th - 29th 2008

These photos were taken on vacation in Ambergris Caye, Belize. See the Ambergris Caye message boards for a trip report and to get more info. Please feel free to take a copy
(right click and copy image or save image) if you want one. You can also say hello by signing the guestbook.

I had a lot of fun with the underwater camera. I am still learning and got a few more shots this year that I am actually happy with. I am happy to get advice on the Angry Pig
message boards if you want to comment. AP message Boards
AIMG061.jpg
My favourite picture from this vacation, Scubalady (from the message boards) said I should always shoot up. Consequently I was high as a kite when I took this.
AIMG062.jpg
Another heroin inspired photo. Who knew you needed so many drugs?
IMG001.jpg
Not even an aspirin involved in this shot of our Captain Morgans apartment kitchen - I need to get back on the smack!
IMG002.jpg
A little Belizean artwork from the apartment.
IMG003.jpg
The living room in the apartment, outside there was a hot-tub and a balcony - It was a nice place.
IMG004.jpg
Caye Caulker and the Rasta Boat, I am not sure if it was steam powered or if it was just the 'erb smoke.
IMG005.jpg
Gregory the Caye Caulker cat. He just hung around at the Lazy Lizard.
IMG006.jpg
Meanwhile Manuel kept an eye open for fish from the diving board at the Lazy Lizard. Pelicans are so industrious (but they are crap at small talk).
IMG007.jpg
The group - I, for some reason, look giant. I am average size, the world is just short!
IMG008.jpg
One of several divers I took photos of. If you see yourself feel free to download, just sign the guestbook to say Hello.
IMG009.jpg
This looks like it may be shark porn. I do not approve of the exploitation of innocent sharks (unless they are really hot!)
IMG010.jpg
This one had to be on downers. Tony the dive master takes yet another teen runaway shark 'into the movies'.
IMG011.jpg
In honour of 'Twighlight' and 'True Blood' I have included a picture of a vampire shark!
IMG012.jpg
This is Sue with her new fins, there was a lot of disturbance which leads to the particles in the water showing up. Nothing I can do - sorry!
IMG013.jpg
Two more divers - These guys were from Arizona I think. They seemed cold!
IMG014.jpg
Mike, from Amigos Del Mar. I cannot say enough good stuff about this dive shop - except that the dive masters sometimes forget their masks!
IMG015.jpg
Phone me! How, my motorola is not waterproof!
IMG016.jpg
More hand holding Arizonians (?) - Must be the shark porn having an effect.
IMG017.jpg
A diver showing that handkerchiefs should be properly stowed before takeoff.
IMG018.jpg
OK. I am not sure about this one either - can't be the drugs as I was not shooting up. Must have been drunk!
IMG019.jpg
Another diver - he seems about to knee someone in the snorkel!
IMG020.jpg
The happiest diver I have a photograph of - honestly, she's even smiling with a regulator in her mouth!
IMG021.jpg
Captain Pete from Fishing San Pedro throws a net in to catch 'sardines' or bait fish for the monsters we were about to catch.
IMG022.jpg
Angel, the first mate, bait changer, fish filleter, cleanup crew and general guy about town pretends to be Captain.
IMG023.jpg
A huge haul of 'sardines' - why there must have been almost ten of them!
IMG024.jpg
My rod bends, must have a huge fish on. Could be a tasty snapper or a delicious barracuda or a delectable grouper or....
IMG025.jpg
a floppy and fairly useless stingray!!
IMG026.jpg
Where is Steve Irwin when you need him?
IMG027.jpg
This little beastie was released to feed some more. Stingrays are not good to eat and even when used as hats are a bit too floppy.
IMG028.jpg
Angel relaxes as we go after the really big minnows..
IMG029.jpg
Jay shows us how to relax with a beliken and a stingray - oops - it's just a very floppy hat!
IMG030.jpg
I get the thumbs up from Angel for my daring use of super stylish shorts! Not many people would get away with such a fashion statement!
IMG031.jpg
It's either a very thin Halibut or a barracuda - I appear to have lost my fish recognition book.
IMG032.jpg
Jay laughs - he has a plot in mind to break this record...
IMG033.jpg
IMG034.jpg
Sorry Jay, but I think I have the bigger Halibut!
IMG035.jpg
OK, we'll call it a draw then.
IMG036.jpg
Jay celebrates with two Belikens as we leave him stranded on a strange caye - alone, with only beer for company.
IMG037.jpg
Captain Toothy!
IMG038.jpg
Aaah! Heinz baked beans (apparently in Belize there was a misprint on the labels) - the perfect accompaniment to fresh caught fish. Ask Gordon Ramsay.
IMG039.jpg
Angel fillets one of the huge snappers we caught. The perspective and angle of the shot make it appear small but it was over three feet long.
IMG040.jpg
Captain Pete smiles while on a break from shouting at Angel.
IMG041.jpg
OK, I said it was a draw...the competition is over. We are equal.
IMG042.jpg
This is the same photo as the last one - who has been editing this page - Jay? Adding more photos. You are not fooling anyone you know!!
IMG043.jpg
Captain Pete shows he is so good he does not even need a rod.
IMG044.jpg
Wishing the fish a 'Happy Christmas' (Bonk). 'Happy Thanksgiving' (Bonk). 'Happy New Year' (Bonk). Not many made it to easter.
IMG045.jpg
OK - that's just showing off now!
IMG046.jpg
Stop it!! You are not fooling us - it's the same frickin' fish!
IMG047.jpg
Sue with her head all plaited up! Makes a change from Jay and his bloody barracudas! Note the Obama T-shirt. That was a huge hit.
IMG048.jpg
A profile in plaits!
IMG049.jpg
Either a building site of a roof standing competition. Note the use of scaffolding twigs. A health and safety inspector was observed clutching his heat and sweating
IMG050.jpg
One of the many friendly 'pot-lickers' who we met. This is at Lillys for breakfast. We did not come across any nasty dogs at all. Apart from one pitbull who tried to sell us a timeshare and a wooden shark.
IMG051.jpg
Captain Morgans from the dock. The center of this is fuzzy - I seemed to have some focus issues and now I will have to check the camera.
IMG052.jpg
Captain Morgans 4 storey buildings. These are apparently for extended occupancy - not sure how that works but I'd stay there..Nice with a capital N.
IMG053.jpg
Sittin' the dock of the bay
IMG054.jpg
The Captain Morgans boat pulls in.
IMG055.jpg
Amigos Del Mar - 'Tanks a lot' picks up up for the morning dive.
IMG056.jpg
Our driver....Like the rest of Amigos Del Mar he was a nice and very helpful guy.
IMG057.jpg
Jeremy on the other hand was a complete bastard
IMG058.jpg
Whose is this? I want it. Give it to me now.
IMG059.jpg
Jay looking thoughtful. Ha Ha Ha Ha! Only kidding.
IMG060.jpg
Andrea wears the largest sunglasses known to man. These can actually be seen from space.
IMG063.jpg
A shark. Nothing more to say about this one. It is self explanatory. I'll shut up now.
IMG064.jpg
A fish - honestly - what do you want from me? Blood? It's a frickin fish!!! Now where is my Zoloft?
IMG065.jpg
I like this, I am not sure of the correct name for it but I like it none the less. Looks like cabbage coral but feel free to correct me.
IMG066.jpg
A moray swims free just outside the reef.
IMG067.jpg
A full shot of the moray.
IMG068.jpg
Herb the lobster hangs out under a rock.
IMG069.jpg
While a grouper swims grumpily by.
IMG070.jpg
A trumpet fish hangs around at the bottom of the photo. Yes, I know it's not a great photo but what the heck..
IMG071.jpg
Another grouper swims past, this one seems a lot more cheerful.
IMG072.jpg
A moray pokes his nose out as if to say 'Hoi - you kids get out of here!! I know your dad! Now f*** off!!'
IMG073.jpg
A group of fish hang out, all that's missing is chips and tomato sauce!
IMG074.jpg
A closer view. A grey angel and some schoolmasters if my fish identifcation book (which I found again) is correct.
IMG075.jpg
A barrel sponge - I like these. They stay still and don't bugger off when you point a camera at them. Not like fish - bastards!
IMG076.jpg
These are not barrel sponges - I know this from the fact that they do not look like the previous picture. These are called something else.
IMG077.jpg
This should be called the 'infected finger coral' but is probably not. I am going to have to get the book out aren't I?
IMG078.jpg
Ah - an angel - I was getting bored with sponges and corals....
IMG079.jpg
Although I like this one. Note the tiny puffers, as I said, there were thousands of them.
IMG080.jpg
A turtle does an impressive imitation of a shark. This is rarely seen behaviour in the animal kingdom and these rare molluscs are not fully understood.
IMG081.jpg
A green parrot fish in a sad mood. He is feeling rather blue! Oh come on!! That was funny.
IMG082.jpg
See - Sue thought it was funny!
IMG083.jpg
Dude! WTF!! Note the puffers all over the place.
IMG084.jpg
You have got to be shitting me!! What the hell is that?
IMG085.jpg
A shark under hypnosis - shortly after this it did a chicken impression and a 1970 disco dance. It did not remember a thing about the experience.
IMG086.jpg
An outcrop with some soft corals - It should be noted I am not some coral or sponge pervert at this point. I have a saltwater aquarium so I like to see what this stuff should look like. It's not like the coral is all that hot....I've seen hotter.
IMG087.jpg
A schoolmaster hangs out under a rock outcrop
IMG088.jpg
Same guy, I like these photos for the colours
IMG089.jpg
I also like the way his fins are kind of transluscent. These are, I think, nice photos.
IMG090.jpg
A turtle, who, from his expression, disagrees with me.
IMG091.jpg
Same turtle - still disgreeing. I find turtles are very difficult to reason with and stick to their guns.
IMG092.jpg
This one was pretty annoying actually and would not entertain a reasoned argument.
IMG093.jpg
It got to the point where he disguied himself as an angel just to avaoid the discussion. Turtles are very immature generally.
IMG094.jpg
A nice windows background.
IMG095.jpg
More surreal but it still works.
IMG096.jpg
OK, now we are getting into WTF territory. I mean, Dude??
IMG097.jpg
A much nicer turtle picture (and , in fact, a much nicer turtle). This is Clifford and his father is something in the city.
IMG098.jpg
Clifford heading away....
IMG099.jpg
awaaaayyyyyyy.....into the distance - bye bye. Clifford.
IMG100.jpg
A fish with measles. Stay away.
IMG101.jpg
An incorrectly rotated picture of a turtle. Still, I wouldn't think anyone will notice.
IMG102.jpg
A Tang, which type of tang I do not know, for simplicity we'll call it a Blue one.
IMG103.jpg
Shortly before the great shark attack of '08 where a diver got a nasty gumming from a nurse shark.
IMG104.jpg
Sue in the co-pilots seat of the Tropic air flight. As can be seen this is the 1000th Cessna Caravan. I could not fit in the co-pilots seat which is pretty lucky for the other passangers.
IMG105.jpg
Caye Caulker luxury timeshares.
IMG106.jpg
A desireable residence, all round sea views. Quiet location with year round sea breeze.
IMG107.jpg
Same place. I was going to buy it but I did not have change of a dollar.
IMG108.jpg
Cormorants laughing at us during the disastarous tarpon fishing trip where we caught exactly zero tarpon. Did not see a tarpon, don't believe there were any tarpon and generally had a tarpon free day.
IMG109.jpg
A Tarpon - Oh no....It's Sue again.
IMG110.jpg
A rather large barrel tarpon.
IMG111.jpg
A cluster of orange tube sponges from one of the Turneffe dives. If you have the choice between the Blue Hole and Turneffe I would always go for Turneffe.
IMG112.jpg
Sponges again but this time one of the baby puffers gets center stage
IMG113.jpg
Swimming over the top of one of the larger barrels - a helicopter view.
IMG114.jpg
A spotted toad fish, unique to Belize hangs out under a rock
IMG115.jpg
A slightly closer view. They really are cool fish to see and but tough to spot. Mike at Amigos Del Mar found this one for me.
IMG116.jpg
Another photo. I took a few to play with the strobes and this one came out badly.
IMG117.jpg
This one is not too bad. I think I'll need 97 years to get to be any good at this underwater photography stuff/
IMG118.jpg
This is another toadfish - two on one dive - woohoo!
IMG119.jpg
I think this was the model for the tree stump in Flash Gordon that they had to stick thier hands inside and not get stung.
IMG120.jpg
Looks like a hurricane is hitting the divers. Note Mike is wearing tdifferent coloured fins. The only reason I could ever think of was to show who the Dive Master is. I suppose colour blidness works as well.OH, and a barrel sponge.
IMG121.jpg
A grey angel poses patiently for a photograpgh.
IMG122.jpg
I just took this to show the numbers of little fish that were present. A lot ere the puffers but there's a fair amount of life out there. Mind you, you'd need a fair few of these to make fish and chips with.
IMG123.jpg
Trying to be all artsy...Well I like it.
IMG124.jpg
A small speckled Moray.
IMG125.jpg
A small speckled Moray teaches us the important lesson - Never use your digital zoom!!
IMG126.jpg
I thought this was Clifford but it turned out I was wrong. So I swam away ratehr quickly as I did not want to be a Turtle paparazzi type diver.
IMG127.jpg
But not befers, in case this was the Lindsay Lohan of the turtle world, grabbing another 'candid' shot.
IMG128.jpg
And the obligatory 'ass' shot to show celulite and sell to hello magazine
IMG129.jpg
A grey angel and, I believe, a French angel
IMG130.jpg
A shy French angel hides behind a rock.
IMG131.jpg
A bi-colored angel. Until the 1960s these fish could not ride on a bus with themselves!
IMG132.jpg
Just some nice coloured sponges topped with two purple tube sponges posing as if to say 'pause'.
IMG133.jpg
A cow fish swims past looking relaxed.
IMG134.jpg
Same cow fish with horns in shot and on display - is this photo better than the udder (I crack myself - but nobody else apparently - up).
IMG135.jpg
A speckled Moray head mounted on a coral wall - who committed this crime? We'll never know.
IMG136.jpg
For anyone of may age and Britishness you may notice a close resemblance to Basil Brush - Boom Boom!!
IMG137.jpg
Lunch swims past.
IMG138.jpg
A parrot fish invades my shot of a resting grouper.
IMG139.jpg
See him grin after ruining the last shot. Parrot fishes are well known for having strange senses of humour.
IMG140.jpg
This is a pretty large barrel sponge. In fact, it was f**king huge!!!
IMG141.jpg
An innocent spong but resting inside we find....
IMG142.jpg
Horatio, King of the crabs. Apparently a very tasty king of the crabs but we left him to contemplate the meaning of life inside his sponge.
IMG143.jpg
A herd of divers on a sandy plain looking for garden eels.
IMG144.jpg
For lunch at Turneffe we stopped at the busy city of Castaway.
IMG145.jpg
As it was Thanksgiving I felt it only right that I should dress as a pumpkin.
IMG146.jpg
At the beginning of the vacation I was complaining about seeing no turtles. Now I cannot move for the buggers!!
IMG147.jpg
This one is playing hide and seek behind the green frond. Little did e know I was behind him and the game was up.
IMG148.jpg
This was cool. Another diver got my attention to show me this turtle feeding. He was lying on the bottom munching at something or other.
IMG149.jpg
and the angel fish was darting in every now and then to pick at the scraps.
IMG150.jpg
I watched them for a while you cannot stay too long - you have to let everyone else have a look.
IMG151.jpg
Simon - we were waiting for the emergency services after this high speed crash left him embedded in a rock.
IMG152.jpg
Alex the stingray hides on the sea bed. Alex is OK at hiding but not very imaginative when choosing a location.
IMG153.jpg
Shaking himself he emerges from the sand...
IMG154.jpg
Jay and Andrea on the boat top Captain Morgans. Andrea has lost the huge shades at this point.
IMG155.jpg
Possibly the biggest grouper I have ever seen (Then again....possibly not!)
IMG156.jpg
A Jack Cravalle (not sure about the spelling there). We had paused to fillet the fish and this one took my bait. It was a struggle to land him as I had to circle the boat twice! I say it took half an hour, Jay says 10 minutes. :-)
IMG157.jpg
Captain Pete got all excited over this one. It was, he said, 13 foot hammerhead. It was big! Inside the reef near Caye Chapel. We'd already seenan 8 foot Bull shark on the trip.
IMG158.jpg
Another busy lunch location. Nobody to be seen for miles! The sea lice were in evidence though - eek!
IMG159.jpg
I do not know the name of this location, it was Lunch Caye as fare as we were concerned.
IMG160.jpg
Beating the crowds at Lunch Caye.
IMG161.jpg
Captain Pete and his uniquely designed Bar-b-q. It worked!!
IMG162.jpg
Captain Pete again, I have to say, he and Angel were great and really took care of us.
IMG163.jpg
Jay strikes a pose! Vogue!
IMG164.jpg
The catch of the day - minus the lunch Barracudas and the lunch Snappers.
IMG165.jpg
This is basically the same photo but when you catch a jack thay big it is worth repeating!
IMG166.jpg
The lunch site at Castaway - Turneffe. Sue strides away from the hut with the strange chimney.
IMG167.jpg
A quick double take reveals the chimney to be something more than an architectural feature as an Osprey comes to land.
IMG168.jpg
The house at Castaway - This was the name we were given by the dive team so I hope it is correct. Later we fed an octopus from the dock.
IMG169.jpg
The chimney nest with it's beautiful occupant. Apparently he is an annual visitor.
IMG170.jpg
Another shot of what I think is an Osprey. It is certainly a fish eagle or fish hawk of some description.
IMG171.jpg
And again.
IMG172.jpg
Finally - solitude.

All Spolling Mistooks are the fault of my keyboard and nothing to do with my small and spongy brain....This page was created with Irfanview - a great piece of free software which I recommend to anyone.
